Artist Research: Jelle Martens

Jelle Martens is an artist and graphic designer, from Belgium, he is well known for his mixture of photography within a collage. His work is very unusual but is very interesting at the same time. He uses geometric shapes, which are filled in with various image taken by him, and the ones that are left he fills in with block colour. The parts of his work that I like about, is his style of the way his work is presented at the end. Also the way he only uses small components of a picture and not trying to fit it all in.

The only thing of his work in general that I dislike, is that the reason behind what it is meant to represent, or show the audience viewing it. This composition is completely different to what other artists would go for; this is because he uses different colours as well as opposing parts of scenery that has been taken through photography. The colours that he uses to fill in the shapes that haven’t anything in then, goes well with

the photographs as it adds contrast between the two. The colour scheme always depends what the photographs look like as to what the block colours will be.

To me his work portrays that nature is not always organic as it can be geometric as well. His work can be used in posters, magazines and even be displayed in an exhibition; the images are crisp and clear to be identified as to what they are of.

The form of this artist work is that the photograph parts are being shown in a different ways as to what they normally are. The function of his work is that it can be used in a manner of ways, for it to be displayed; usually photographs are kept as one whereas he changes the way it is shown.
